Generosity Matters

Listen To Him

Shortly after hearing a sermon on Jesus' transfiguration, I read an Ann Voskamp blog. She mentioned a Lent of Listening. My spirit was intrigued and I wondered what that might mean for us in 100 Shares Tampa Bay. What does a Lent of Listening mean? What could we be doing in this Lenten Listening time to know Him better?
Listen To Him

Matthew's account of Jesus' transfiguration in chapter 17 says God spoke from a cloud to Peter, James and John, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"

Listening led me to Psalm 46:10…

"Be still and know that I am God." Of course, starting there makes sense when you wonder about listening. Being still…was that easier to do while minding sheep? How well do I do STILL?  Am I better at being still physically, mentally, neither, both?

Then it causes me to think about--

1. Making time to listen--

Well, picture with me…it's verrrry early Friday morning, it's a conference call with the 100 Shares Board members, most of us still in our pajamas, with coffee or tea mug close by, pausing at the beginning of the day to pray…

"Lord, you are worthy.
"Father, we ask in your name.
"Your eyes and ears are throughout the world and here in FL.
"Give us a broken and contrite heart God.
"We can boldly ask for 5 more partners... for the Spirit's presence…for listening…for kingdom-seeking understanding."

We prayed, listened to others pray, listened as God began our day with listening to Him.

2. Setting a priority—

Any day, any season is good for making listening a priority, including Lenten time. It's never that we don't have enough time. It's always that we have different priorities. Can you make opening your Bible and listening to Him daily a priority…for a few Lenten days?

3. Giving up distractions—

Were the distractions less for the 3 disciples there on the mountain? Jesus took them away from the many, many Jewish customs of the day; generally there were many rules to follow. Could Peter, James & John hear God more clearly on a mountain? If we put aside our distractions, could we hear God more clearly?  Are you distracted from God's Word, God's voice, God's ways? What distraction might you ask Him to help you give up today…and for a few more days? I don't know about you, but I often need refocusing. I have to purge distractions and force awareness on what is important.?

What is important is that we listen to Him. How about reading Psalm 139 for a focus on God and his many wonderful attributes? Or listen to this hand bell choir's beautiful anthem on love and charity, "Contemplation on Ubi Caritas?" by Catherine McMicheal...
